Talking Time Clocks

Talking Clock

Among the many different and unique clocks of the world, there may be a few that are not so commonly known. I'd like to introduce you to the talking clock. Quite the interesting invention for many different types of people though this concept is really not a new one.

Over they years, ideas have been developed and there is more available now then ever before. No longer can a disability keep you from experiencing the time of your life.

An innovative idea, different from braille, is the talking clock primarily for the visually impaired. This offers them something other than the well known braille that people associate with being blind. Braille focuses on touch while the clock stimulates their hearing.

Not only are there regular size clocks, but there are talking watches as well. The clock itself may or may not have a digital display as well as giving the time audibly. There are over one hundred and fifty regular clocks and fifty types of watches that have the function of telling time with speech.

A great resource to learn more about this type of technology for the visually impaired is the American Foundation for the Blind.

While the talking clock is not a new device, it has gained popularity in different ways. A tool for the visually impaired is one way, but  another way is with children. Many popular cartoon characters have shown their faces on a speech empowered time teller.

The International Society of Talking Clocks Collectors has a museum with over eight hundred talking clocks. Most people remember seeing Mickey Mouse on old clocks and telephones.

With the modernizing of the talking clock, the voice inside them has become decidedly more feminine for the most part. The president of The International Society of Talking Clocks Collectors offers three possible answers to why most clocks have turned feminine.

One reason is because a woman's voice can be more soothing, perhaps motherly. The second reason could be in memory of the female voice being associated with secretarial functions. Thirdly, perhaps the female voice is softer and less intrusive to the listener.
