The Many Types Of Chime Clocks And Striking Clocks
Some of the oldest clocks in existence were chime clocks or striking clocks. The first clocks of this type struck each hour, but didn't actually have a clock face for reading the time. This type of clock has come a long way since then. They have gone through a lot of different stages to get where they are today as well. The first clocks only struck once each hour. Doing more than this requires a more complicated clock mechanism, so it took a while for these sorts of clocks to be developed. Eventually clocks were made that struck a different number of times each hour. Some of these clocks were 24 hour clocks, and others were 12 hour clocks. Some even struck based on the Roman numerals, with one type of note for the V and one for the I. Eventually the 12 hour clock became the standard for most chime clocks. Besides striking the hours, some chime clocks also strike the half hour or quarter hour. The first clocks to do so originated in China, and had a bell to strike the hour and a drum to strike the quarter hour. Later clocks of this type tend to either strike the number of the hour and then once each quarter hour, or else play a tune on the hour and a few notes for each quarter hour. There are a number of special types of chime clock available. Besides the regular chiming clock that strikes the hours and quarter hours, there is a repeater clock that will repeat the last strike played so you can tell time in the dark. As mentioned above, there are also musical clocks that play tunes instead of simply chiming. Another option is the automaton clock, such as a cuckoo clock, where a mechanical figure will go through a little routine each time the hour strikes. There is also the ship's bells clock, which strikes the ship's bells of a nautical watch instead of the regular time. These days you can get quartz clocks that mimic striking clocks through the use of speakers and chips, or electrical power to do the striking, meaning it is no longer necessary to regularly wind the clock and the striking mechanism.
