Antique Cuckoo Clocks - Unique And Decorative
Long before the invention of the modern analog clock in the 17th century, watching time go by has been a pass time that some enjoy. However, since the actual invention of the cuckoo clock, this pass time has become more exciting and provides a small reward at the top of the hour and at the half hour. The cuckoo clock is especially favored by children and grandparents. How exciting it is to see the little birdie pop out and sing a little song! Cuckoo clocks are driven by weights and counter balance mechanism that keeps time accurate. This design hasn't changed much since it's original creation over 300 years ago. Most of the models today are carved from wood or plastic. The inside mechanisms are no longer made of wood as they were in the olden days but made of metal and are more durable. The sound of the cuckoo bird is made by a set of bellows inside the cuckoo house. One bellow alone makes a "coo" sound, and therefore the two bellows together complete the cuckoo sound. There are two kinds of these clocks, a 1-day operation or an 8-day operation clock. Basically, each clock requires to be reset by pulling on the weights that hang below the cuckoo birds house. A 1-day operational clock requires the weights to be adjusted once each day to keep the clock accurate. And likewise, the 8-day clock requires adjustment only once every eight days. Most of the weights are shaped like pine cones, and the number of pulls indicates the features of the clock. Two pulls indicates that it chimes at the half hour and the hour. The three pine cone pulls indicates that a song also plays at the top of the hour. The pendulum is usually carved as a leaf. Both the leaf and pine cones are traditional ear marks for the cuckoo clock. The more modern design of cuckoo clocks includes a quartz mechanism that is battery operated. The newer versions of these time pieces not only chirp and play songs, but they also have the ability to play actual bird noises and a series of songs.
